The department of Physiotherapy at Benjamin Mkapa Hospital, established in 2018, is committed to providing a PREVENTIVE, EDUCATIVE, CURRATIVE AND REHABILITATIVE after the patient illness or acquired disability. Initially started with a single physiotherapist, the department has expanded to offer a range of services, including electrotherapy modalities such as TENS, US THERAPY, THERMAL THERAPY etc.
At that time the department was able to attend the patient between 2 to 5 patients per day with a single room and single physiotherapist
The department has improved as the day goes and able to attend 70 to 80 patients per day, this is equivalent to attend 800 to 1200 patients per month and almost 3000 patients in quarterly year. In a year the number of patients attended are approximately between 12,000 to13,000 patients.
In the year 2020 the department shifted to the second building basement floor where the department was established until now.

- Consultations: We offer expert consultations for physiotherapy treatment from the different outpatients’ clinics such as orthopedics, neurosurgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, general surgery, obs & gyn etc.

Staff and Expertise:
- Physiotherapist: The department is currently staffed by 12 physiotherapist who oversees the clinical management of patients and directs the department's treatment protocols.
- Nurses: In addition, the department has two nurse assistance (N/A) who assists with the overall physiotherapy management of patients, provide direct care to patient, patients education and ensuring comprehensive care.
- Multidisciplinary Collaboration: The physiotherapist team works closely with social workers, nutritionists, psychologists, oncologist and specialist to provide holistic, patient-centered care.
Facilities and Technology:
- State-of-the-Art Facilities: The department is equipped with modern treatment spaces for physiotherapy treatment. We prioritize patient comfort and privacy in our treatment areas.
Achievements and Milestones:
- Patient Load: The department currently serves approximately 12,000 patients annually, reflecting its critical role in the healthcare system.
- Expanded Services: In addition to consultations we now offer education and preventive services, with a significant focus on community education.
- Ongoing Development: The construction of a rehabilitation medicine unit will be a major milestone, enhancing the department's ability to treat a broader range of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, orthotic & prosthetic and speech therapy.
Future Plans and Goals:
- Establishment of a physiotherapy services: In collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the University of Dodoma (UDOM), Benjamin Mkapa Hospital is working on establishing Center of Excellence. This center will serve as a hub for comprehensive physiotherapy management, offering advanced treatments, therapeutic, and research services to improve patient outcomes and foster national and international care expertise.
- Expansion of Treatment Options: The department plans to introduce club foot management and further advance the use of targeted therapies to provide more effective and personalized treatment options for patients with specific types of neuromusculoskeletal disorders. These cutting-edge treatments will help improve survival rates and reduce side effects compared to traditional therapies.
- Enhanced Community Outreach: We aim to extend our physiotherapy awareness campaigns to reach more people, particularly in underserved areas.
- Continued Staff Development: We are committed to the ongoing professional development of our physiotherapy and nursing staff to keep pace with the latest advances in physiotherapy treatments.
